Bearing My Brother

As Christians, it is often easier for us to receive the forgiveness of God and to enjoy the benefits that come by it, than to extend that forgiveness to others within the body of Christ. Very often, we say that we will bury the hatchet, but we leave the handle exposed so we can take it out on another occasion and use it.

I love the words of one man who said, "Every man should have a fair-sized cemetery to bury the faults of others."  Those are good words! Ephesians 4:2 says, “Be patient, bearing with one another in love.” May we find ourselves doing that throughout the day!

I happen to catch an old episode of Bewitched the other night on TV and it caused me to think of the term “bewitched”. It comes from the 13th century meaning; ‘to cast a spell over’. The term today means to captivate, to entrance or to charm.

Paul used this term when he addressed the church in Galatia. Though they were saved by faith, these believers started trusting in their own works. Paul said in Gal.3:1, “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you…Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?”

Believers today can be captivated by many things as well. Captivated by a good looking person. Captivated by a get-rich-quick scheme. Captivated by an opportunity to promote ourselves. Many things can bewitch us. However, as we walk in the Spirit, as we rely on the Holy Spirit to direct out lives, if we listen to Him, He keeps us on the straight and narrow road. May the only thing captivating us today is unending love for God and His Word that never changes and never fails!
